Flavour Pairing with Coffee and Panini at Symphony Coffeehouse

Have you ever walked into a Portland coffee shop, looked at the coffee shop menu, and said to yourself that there’s nothing to eat here?

Well, when you come to Symphony Coffeehouse (don’t bother Googling “coffee shop near me” if you’re in Beaverton, Oregon – just go straight to us!), we promise you won’t go hungry! Our coffee shop dine-in menu has a lot of different options to fill your tummy.

And of course, probably our best offering is our paninis! They’re made fresh always and are served with a side salad and chips. If you’re looking for a gluten-free option, that’s available as well.

And the best part?

These paninis go well with our coffee! And we bet they’re one of the best you’ll ever try as well. They’re so good, you might even start referring to Symphony Coffeehouse as not just one of the best Beaverton coffee shops, but the best coffee shop ever as soon as you taste one.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves! Let’s first take a look at our panini offerings and our coffee recommendations for each one.

Without further ado, let’s get started, yes?

What’s a panini?

So first things first. You might be wondering what in the world a panini is.

Well, a panini is a type of grilled sandwich made using Italian bread. Usually, that particular Italian bread is ciabatta, but you can also use focaccia or baguette. The sandwich is usually composed of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and anything else that the sandwich maker wants to include.

And if you’re thinking that you see them usually grilled, you’re right! But what you may not know is that their being grilled is not necessary. They do end up being crispy and crunchy.

Why use these particular Italian types of bread? That’s because they’re dense enough to be grilled and maintain their shape without any mushiness or deformation.

If you’re going the usual route of grilling a panini, it’s best to brush the outside of the bread with extra virgin olive oil. Then when you grill, use a panini press to achieve the best results. Check out all the coffee shops in Beaverton, Oregon that serve paninis – they do the same thing.

And of course, the result is one delicious sandwich! Yum!

Why paninis?

Well, the bigger question is, why NOT paninis? After all, this sandwich is customizable with whatever ingredient you want to put in. For example, if you don’t want exotic Italian meat, you can put in chicken instead.

You can also make it healthier by adding your choice of vegetables.

The bread choice makes it really filling. Plus, it’s easy to make, so it’s definitely for the hungry person who’s rushing to grab a good bite to eat.

And people love paninis everywhere – did you know that there’s a Panini Day

So again… why NOT paninis?

Delicious pairings to try

On our menu, we have four delicious paninis for you to try. But what’s the best kind of coffee to go with each?

Let’s explore possibilities!

1. Grilled Cheese Panini

Out of all the sandwiches in the world, there’s none more basic and more satisfying than a grilled cheese sandwich. And if it’s a grilled cheese panini, it’s even better! This savory snack is a favorite among Americans – according to a 2019 survey, it’s the country’ favorite!

What to drink with a grilled cheese panini, you ask? Well…

  • If you want to fully savor the taste of bread and cheese without diluting the flavor, we suggest going for an Americano. You get a taste of rich black coffee with less bite, and nothing to distract you from the delicious flavor of your sandwich.
  • If you’re eating the grilled cheese panini for comfort, try pairing it with a latte, a very soothing coffee drink. You can also customize the latte by adding more sugar – a contrast to the savory sandwich.
  • Get a cold brew if you’re eating the grilled cheese sandwich as a snack. We usually associate cold drinks with snacks, after all!

2. Turkey Panini

A turkey panini is usually light, refreshing and of course, delicious. And because of that, you can try it out with these coffee pairings:

  • A cappuccino. After all, you’re eating something light and refreshing. Pair it with something that contrasts – an indulgent and comforting drink with a thick top.
  • Speaking of contrast, you can also try pairing this with an espresso shot. Light food plus a strong drink? Take our money!
  • You can also go the other route and pair the turkey panini with a decaf, so you end up with light food and a drink that’s light on the caffeine. This is a good combination if you’re ending the day and just want to relax.

3. Barbecue Chicken Panini

This sandwich is both sweet and savory and can remind you of the summer season. It’s a great sandwich for lunch or dinner.

Now, what are the drink options to pair it with?

  • One of our recommendations for this would still be cold brew. After all, if you eat this kind of sandwich, particularly in the summer and it gets hot, then cold brew would be perfect to drink, right? You get a good kick plus the refreshing cold.
  • Do you know another thing that reminds us of summer? Milk. That means you should also try pairing this with a cortado!
  • Finally, a barbecue chicken panini can be kind of indulgent, so why not pair it with a cappuccino, another indulgent drink?

4. Caprese Panini

The Caprese panini is a sandwich for those who don’t eat meat. It’s very fresh and is perfect for picnics.

Here are our recommendations for coffee pairings:

  • Again, cold brew! Hey, just pairing freshness with refreshments.
  • The simple drip coffee for a contrast of tastes – you’ll be pairing a fresh taste with the slightly bitter but still delicious coffee.
  • A mocha, to contrast the sweetness of your coffee with the fresh Caprese panini. You can never go wrong with contrasting flavors, we promise!

Instant Coffee vs Thornton Coffee: Is There a Difference?

Without a doubt, a freshly brewed cup of joe can perk up your day, whatever the time may be. As coffee shop owners, we are very well aware that coffee lovers out there have distinct coffee flavor preferences ranging from instant coffee mix to freshly brewed beans. However, other coffee drinkers might say that all coffee tastes the same.

But are they really?

To better understand this, let’s take a closer look at the difference between instant coffee and Thornton Coffee.

What is instant coffee?

If you are constantly on the go and you feel as if you don’t have enough time to ground or brew a cup of joe, then you may be very well familiar with instant coffee.

Instant coffee can be made quickly and easily, hence the name. There is no need for any specialized machine. It comes in the form of pre-grounded powder where you just need to pour hot water and voila – you’re good to go! You don’t necessarily need to go to a coffee shop to get an instant coffee. Packs are sold in convenience stores and grocery stores, and you can take them wherever or whenever you want to for a quick pick-me-upper.

Because of how convenient, affordable, and delicious it is, instant coffee has become a popular coffee choice among consumers.

What is Thornton Coffee?

Thornton Coffee is a specialized type of coffee that can only be found in Beaverton, Oregon. It offers a distinct taste from what an instant coffee can offer.

Whether you’re looking for a classic brew or something a little more adventurous for your taste buds, a cup of Thornton Coffee may be able to satisfy that. This is because of the unique roasting levels it undergoes to achieve your flavor preference – from light pour-overs to rich and full-bodied espresso shots.

Which is better: Instant Coffee or Thornton Coffee?

And now it all boils down to the most controversial question of them all: which is better?

As coffee shop owners, all we can say is that this all depends on your personal preference. But if we are to take into consideration the quality, roasting levels, and unique taste like no other, then we’d have to recommend Thornton Coffee!

Instant coffee is an excellent choice for those who need a quick caffeine fix, especially if a coffee shop is not accessible at the moment. It’s also affordable, which is why it’s easier to get a hold of them. It may also have something to do with the budget. If you are setting aside some money to save up for something but you couldn’t let a day go by without any caffeine, then you may opt for instant coffee because it is cheaper.

Thornton coffee, on the other hand, is more specialized. You can exclusively find this type of coffee in Portland coffee shops, such as in Beaverton, Oregon. Thornton coffee has a distinct and more flavorful depth than what instant coffee can offer. If you are a coffee drinker who is looking for a more unique and flavorful mix, which you can get for a reasonable price, then you may prefer a cup of Thornton coffee.

The bottom line is that there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to which is the better choice. Understandably, we all have different tastes and preferences. The most important thing to consider when it comes to comparing the better option is how satisfied you will be in the long run.

Cold Brew Coffee: Best to Drink & Where to Get in Beaverton, OR?

Are you looking for a delicious, energizing way to start your day? Then look no further than cold brew coffee! Whether you are a local professional ready to jumpstart your daily grind or a traveler looking to explore the local food scene of Beaverton, OR, this is a guaranteed easy and convenient way to get our caffeine fix! Given its unique flavor profile and smooth texture, cold brew coffee is becoming a crown favorite among coffee lovers everywhere.

To know more about this trending beverage, read on to find out what sets it apart from the regular coffee mix and where you can get the best cold brew coffee in the area!

Cold Brew Coffee vs. Regular Coffee

If you’d take a look at coffee shop menus, you’ll probably notice that cold brew coffee has become a popular selection. However, even with its rising popularity, there are people who don’t seem to know what sets it apart from regular coffee.

“Does putting ice over it be enough to call it cold brew?” “Wait, isn’t that the same as iced coffee?”

Well, not exactly.

So, how is cold brew coffee exactly different from regular coffee?

The traditional coffee mix is exposed to heat to extract the coffee’s oil and caffeine, which results in a bitter taste and may be too acidic for coffee drinkers to consume.

Meanwhile, cold coffee brew involves soaking the coffee ground in cold or room temperature water for 12-18 hours, with some even leaving it up until 24 hours. In contrast to the traditional coffee mix, no heat exposure is involved for the cold brew. The slow brewing process allows for the taste to become smoother, richer, and less acidic. So if this sounds like a more preferable treat for your taste buds, cold brew coffee is the way to go!

The benefits of drinking cold brew coffee

Cold brew coffee has become a crowd favorite not only because of its distinct flavor but also offers a lot of benefits you may not experience in the traditional mix.

One is that it is versatile. You can play with its flavor according to your preference and liking. Because of its smoother texture, the taste is generally lighter. If you want to add a stronger kick to it, you can add a shot of espresso or your favorite syrup flavor for a sweeter taste.

Another benefit that you can get from drinking cold brew coffee is that it is less acidic than the traditional hot coffee mix. It is gentle to the stomach and will prevent it from feeling upset and unsettled.

Lastly, it is very refreshing and convenient to drink! What better way to beat the heat and fill up your energy tank than with an ice cold drink such as cold brew coffee? If you haven’t tried it yet, we invite you to do so. You never know, it might just become your new favorite caffeine fix!

Recipes for delicious cold brew coffee drinks

As we have mentioned earlier, cold brew coffee is a very versatile drink. We’re here to recommend some of the best ingredients to combine so you can maximize the best experience out of this trendy drink!

Are you looking for some energy boosters to kickstart a long day? Then we recommend adding 1 part espresso with 2 parts of cold brew coffee. Add some more ice for an extra chilly energy drink.

If you’re into a creamier taste, we recommend adding some touch of a latte to your cold brew coffee! Simply add 1 part of dairy milk (or non-dairy, if that’s what you prefer more).

Want something with a chocolatey twist? Why not try adding 1 part milk (dairy or non-dairy, depending on your preference) and 1 part chocolate syrup? You’re sure to be in for some sweet treat that will satisfy your taste buds.

Looking For The Best Coffee To Suit Your Needs?

Are you the type of person who can’t start the day without having a cup (or two, or three) of coffee?

Do you constantly type “coffee shop near me” wherever you may be, especially if you go out of town? or your really just looking for the best coffee

Well, you’re our kind of person – which is why we hope to see you in our coffeehouse soon!

Going back, even if you can’t live without coffee, you might have found yourself lately getting bored with your usual order. Black coffee is great, but it may have gotten to the point that you find your eyes wandering all over the coffee shop menu.

Plus, you may like the taste of coffee, but sometimes, you want to taste a little more than just coffee.

In short, you just want to add a little variety to your coffee drinking habits.

Well, not to worry – that’s what this article is for! Keep reading for a guide on the different coffees to drink depending on your mood or what you like to taste at the time.

You never know – your regular coffee may change after going through this list.

What are the different types of coffee drinks?

If you can’t stop looking for the best coffee, In no particular order, here are some:

1. Black coffee

We know we mentioned that black is the usual order for most people, but in case it’s not for you, then black coffee is definitely something you should try. It’s made from ground coffee beans and then brewed hot.

And when we mean black, we mean there’s no added sugar, milk, or any other flavor. You drink this just to taste the coffee flavor itself.

Personally, we find that it gives us a good kick in the morning, but also tastes comforting. It just gives you energy to basically wake up and go about your day.

2. Decaf coffee

Think of drinking decaf as you still drinking but with lower caffeine content. In other words, consuming decaf is best when you just want the taste of coffee but not the caffeine, or if you’re someone who suffers from acid reflux but still wants to drink coffee.

3. Espresso

A shot of espresso is stronger than a shot of normal coffee. But what makes espresso different?

Well, the beans used to make espresso are more finely ground. Plus, when making espresso, you use a ratio of more beans than water as compared to what’s used for regular.

As a result, you get a thicker, more flavorful, and more concentrated liquid. And as mentioned, you also get more of a kick!

4. Latte

This drink is formed by about ⅓ of espresso and ⅔ of steamed milk. It is then topped with a thin layer of foam.

However, plenty of shops also experiment with their lattes. Some use flavored syrups like vanilla, while some make nondairy versions because of oat milk. A sweet twist on the latte is the mocha latte, a latte flavored with cocoa powder, melted chocolate, and sugar.

And of course, the most popular customization is probably the latte art!

Drink a latte for a soothing coffee combo with warm milk and one very vibrant taste.

5. Cappuccino

This is a drink that’s just like a latte, but it has a thicker frothy top. This type is usually associated with both indulgence and comfort because of the thicker top and because you can add flavorings to it, like cinnamon.

In short, it’s a great drink to order when you feel like spoiling yourself.

Quick trivia: Italians apparently reserve their cappuccino for breakfast, but if you love cappuccinos, we’re sure you can take it any time of the day.

6. Macchiato

The word means “stained” or “spotted in Italian, so a macchiato has been touched with a spot of milk. Drink this if you want something in the middle of an espresso and a cappuccino. You won’t get as much caffeine as an espresso, but you’ll still be able to taste and feel coffee.

7. Americano

Why is this drink associated with Americans? Well, apparently during World War 2, Americans felt that the coffee in Italy was too strong. They would take off some of the edge of the drink by adding hot water.

It’s still typically black , so if you still want the kick of black coffee but with little less bite, Americano is the way to go.

8. Café au Lait

This French, fancy-sounding drink is similar to a latte, but it’s just made differently. To make this, the barista will use a French press coffee instead of an espresso shot. And instead of steamed milk, they will use scalded milk.

The ratio is 50/50 for the coffee and the milk.

In other words, order this one for a different take on a latte.

9. Cortado

Think of the cortado as the next level of the macchiato. This drink is made by balancing espresso with warm milk that is not as frothy as that of a macchiato. The milk reduces the acidity of the espresso.

Incidentally, the name of the drink comes from the Spanish word “cortar”, which means “to cut.”

Appropriate, wouldn’t you agree?

Anyway, so drink this if you’re acidic and still want a macchiato-style drink!

10. Flat White

We would describe the flat white as a drink that contains espresso and steamed milk. Drinking this will give you the combination of the intensity of espresso and the creamy mouthfeel of milk. Watch for that velvety texture as you take a drink!

Again, this is a great option for people who love the taste of milk and coffee in one drink.

11. Red Eye

This drink is a mix of coffee and a shot of espresso. It’s perfect for people who need a caffeine boost, like people who are on red-eye flights!

An even stronger version of this is called the Black Eye.

12. Cold Brew

Cold brew is made slowly by steeping the coffee grounds over cool or room-temperature water. The result is a smoother taste with less bitterness compared to the usual coffee. It’s also less acidic than black, but has a stronger caffeine kick!

All About Coffee: Pros, Cons, Types, and More!

If we are to name one of the most popular and most consumed drinks on the planet, then it is without a doubt that coffee makes the cut! (And this is setting all biases aside as a coffee shop owner!) In a fast-paced world where everyone is always on-the-go, some would rely on this caffeine-based beverage to elevate their energy and mood throughout the day.

If you are an avid drinker, then we bet you must know how it feels to be without your favorite caffeine fix running in your veins at the start of the day! It has been a staple drink for everyone and sometimes, you might find yourself thinking – what is there about it that makes it so good for most people, if not all?

As a dedicated coffee shop owner, we’re here to share with you some amazing all about coffee facts – from their pros to their cons to the different types to simply what makes them good!

Is coffee good or bad for you?

Before we delve deeper on all about coffee matters, let’s answer one of the most frequently asked questions. Whether it is good or bad, the answers can be a bit controversial; you can consider it like some sort of a split decision. There are actually two sides of the coin here. There are some health benefits that come along with drinking coffee, but at the same time, there are also some effects you might need to watch out for or be more careful about.

To gain more clarity, we have consolidated a list of pros and cons.

Coffee Pros

So let’s start off first with the positives. It is known to offer a lot of benefits, whether it’s for health or simply to increase one’s productivity level.

Pro # 1: Increases brain activity and metabolism

According to Healthline, it has the highest source of caffeine among all beverages. It is a well-known stimulant that can trigger the release of hormones like dopamine and norepinephrine, which are both known to increase brain activity, hence, causing you to feel more alert than usual. So this explains why drinkers are extra perky when they get a dose of caffeine for the day. However, do note that, this boosting effect is only short-term, and it continuously reduces when you drink everyday because your system eventually becomes tolerant to it.

Pro # 2: Packed with antioxidants and nutrients

Believe it or not, it contains a lot of essential nutrients like vitamin Bs, potassium, and magnesium to name a few. It’s also packed with antioxidants, which is essential in combating against free radicals in your body.

Free radicals are known to damage essential proteins and DNA which can result to a number of diseases, including cancer. Antioxidants are a great substance to battle against this, and you can find loads of it in coffee.

Pro # 3: Lowers the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, and Type 2 Diabetes

Another great health benefit we will discuss all about coffee, is the reduced risk of cognitive diseases like Alzheimer’s Disease (which results to the deterioration of the brain and eventually, dementia) and Parkinson’s Disease. Studies have shown that the caffeine helps increase  energy metabolism in the brain, which strengthen its capacity for stronger memory function and capacity.

On another note, it also shows that it can reduce the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. It is known to elevate blood sugar levels because of the effects of insulin. By regularly drinking it, you are lowering of getting the disease.

Coffee Cons

Coffee, in general, is good, but just like anything that is taken excessively, it can have some downsides to it. We’re not sharing these to scare you away, but we would like to take this opportunity to provide helpful information so as to make your coffee experience a healthy and enjoyable one.

Con # 1: Can be addictive and can give you withdrawal symptoms

Caffeine is the substance that makes you crave for more coffee. Some frequent drinkers can’t get enough of having just one cup of joe in a day, so don’t be too surprised if you hear that they are already on their 5th cup for the day. Coffee addict much? You bet! And this is where you may want to consider holding that sip, if you ever resonate with this. Having too much coffee everyday can make you become too dependent on it. Moreover, your body will be tolerant to the increased effects of caffeine. So no matter how many cups of coffee you drink just to help you stay awake, your body will already be immuned to it.

Excess intake can also lead to co-dependency. When you miss a cup, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as brain fog, mood swings, and headaches.

Con # 2: Excessive caffeinated intake can cause anxiety

One of the unwanted side effects of excess caffeinated intake would be anxiety. Have you ever heard of instances where someone gets so jittery or easily nervous and they blame it on the coffee? There are cases where a person can be highly sensitive to caffeine intake, which then results to palpitation and anxiety attacks. So to refrain this from happening, make sure to regulate your coffee intake.

Con # 3: Excessive caffeinated coffee can disrupt your regular sleeping pattern

Disrupted sleep is very important so as to help your body recuperate from exhaustion. So if your body is loaded with caffeine prior to getting that good night’s rest, you might have trouble making your way to dreamland.  This is especially if you are highly sensitive to the effects of caffeine. The purpose of coffee is to keep you alert and awake during the day, but your excessive intake can lead to insomnia. So in order to restore your regular sleeping schedule, it is recommended to reduce your caffeine intake by early afternoon.

Types of Coffee

There are a various types of coffee drinks and we have listed down some of the most common ones that are frequently offered in coffee shops.

Decaffeinated

Despite its reputation that coffee contains caffeine, there is actually a caffeine-free option, that will take out the energy booster effect. This is for those who may want to enjoy a hot cup of coffee before getting a good night’s sleep.

According to the National Coffee Association (NCA) USA, 97% of caffeine is removed from the coffee, leaving only 2mg of caffeine in a decaffeinated coffee. If you’re wondering whether a decaffeinated coffee is good for your health, it most certainly is and can even be a pat of your diet.

Americano

Often mistaken as just another plain black coffee, a cup of Americano actually has a more distinguished taste from the regularly brewed coffee. To get that distinct flavor, Americano is extracted from an espresso shot diluted with water. Some enjoy drinking it as is, but if you want to add a few spoonful of creamer and sugar, you are free to do so as well!

Espresso

Often used as a base for many coffee drinks, espresso is better known as a coffee-brewing method from Italy. It is highly concentrated coffee extract served in a small shot. It is know to have a richer and stronger flavor.

Latte

What happens when you combine espresso and steamed milk?

You have what you would call a cafe latte, or most commonly known as a latte. You can enjoy this drink either as a hot or cold beverage. Instead of just combining espresso and steamed milk together, some shops would also do latte art for a more enjoyable experience!

Macchiato

A macchiato is an espresso-based drink that is “stained” or “marked” coffee as per the translation of its name origin. It is combined with foamed or steamed milk, without overpowering the bold taste of espresso. You can drink it as it is or add some flavor to it to make it more enjoyable to your liking. Caramel Macchiato is a popular variety of this drink.
